In rural Chad, access to medical care is severely limited by vast distances, a shortage of doctors, and an absence of reliable electricity and internet infrastructure. To address these barriers, the Telemedan initiative, launched by Abakar Mahamat, utilizes solar-powered kiosks to bring remote healthcare consultations directly to isolated communities. Equipped with solar panels, batteries, offline data-synchronization capabilities, and diagnostic tools, these kiosks allow trained local operators to register patients and conduct basic medical examinations. Patients can then consult with remote doctors for $2 to $15 per session, a fraction of the $200 or more typically spent on traveling to urban medical facilities. Since its pilot phase, Telemedan has expanded to 37 kiosks across 11 provinces, reaching an estimated 143,000 people and incorporating technology like artificial intelligence for specialized screenings.
While the project aligns with Chad’s national digital health strategy for 2022–2030, the remote system faces inherent operational constraints. The kiosks cannot provide emergency care, perform complex laboratory tests, or deliver hands-on specialized treatments, meaning patients with severe conditions still need access to traditional hospitals.
Additionally, long-term success depends on maintaining equipment, preserving stable network connectivity, continuously training operators, and securing sustainable funding. In short each unit costs approximately $10,000 to manufacture and deploy.
In conclusion, solar-powered telemedicine kiosks serve as a vital intermediary bridge between remote populations and Chad’s centralized healthcare system. Ultimately, drastically reducing medical travel costs and expanding basic diagnostic access. Although they cannot replace full-scale medical facilities, the initiative provides a practical model for integrating technology into infrastructure-poor settings. All with the long-term goal of scaling up across sub-Saharan Africa.
