Zuckerberg Rejects a Coordinated Slowdown
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said each artificial-intelligence company should decide for itself how quickly to develop advanced systems while taking responsibility for their safety. His position separates Meta from recent calls by rival technology leaders for companies and governments to coordinate a broader slowdown.
The debate intensified after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed a three-step safety plan that received support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceXAI leader Elon Musk. Researchers have warned that increasingly capable systems could eventually escape human control, prompting industry leaders to consider how development might be restrained before the risks become unmanageable.
Meta Emphasizes Individual Responsibility
According to Zuckerberg, AI laboratories already have strong incentives to train models safely because they face significant liability if their products cause harm. He argued that every developer can adjust its own pace and take independent precautions without requiring competitors to adopt the same schedule.
Meta’s delay of its Muse AI agent served as Zuckerberg’s main example. The company postponed the release for several months to address safety and security concerns, but it did not ask the rest of the industry to pause development during that period.
Computing Power Should Serve People
Rather than directing resources toward systems capable of automatically improving themselves, Zuckerberg urged companies to prioritize AI models that meet practical human needs. He presented this allocation of computing power as a safer course than racing toward recursive self-improvement.
His remarks reveal a fundamental disagreement over whether AI safety requires collective limits or company-by-company decisions. Meta supports caution and internal safeguards, but Zuckerberg’s approach leaves each laboratory responsible for determining when its technology is ready to advance or be released.
