Amazon just cut 14,000 jobs, and it’s not done

Amazon announced plans to lay off 14,000 corporate employees in 2025. This as part of a restructuring process aimed at preparing the company for the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). The cuts are expected to reach up to 30,000 jobs when the measures are fully implemented. Coming as a consequence of intention to make the company leaner and more agile, aligning with CEO Andy Jassy’s vision of operating like “the world’s biggest startup.”

A shift from human capital to AI infrastructure

According to Beth Galetti, Amazon’s senior vice president of people experience, the company will continue hiring for strategic AI-related roles and prioritize displaced workers for these openings. She emphasized that AI represents the most transformative technology since the Internet, and Amazon must reduce bureaucracy and empower teams to move faster.

The layoffs that represent about 4% of Amazon’s 350,000 corporate staff will begin immediately.  Affecting employees which will be receiving 90 days to find internal positions before severance packages are offered. This move follows the 2023 reduction of 27,000 jobs across multiple divisions.

Experts, including Neil Saunders of GlobalData, note that the decision reflects both economic pressure and a technological tipping point. Companies are now replacing traditional human roles with AI systems to boost efficiency. Jassy previously stated that as generative AI expands, some current jobs will disappear while new ones emerge. This new technology is marking a permanent shift toward automation in the global workforce.
