Reach out to distressed farmers, Congress urges Uttar Pradesh CM

A 60-year-old farmer from Jhansi, allegedly took his own life after unseasonal rains destroyed his paddy crops, leaving him burdened with debt. The incident occurred on October 31 in Kumharar village, where Yadav was found hanging in his room. His family stated that he had sown crops on loan and was devastated after heavy rains caused flooding in fields and ruin of ready-to-harvest crops across several areas. His son said the loss, coupled with financial pressure and his sister’s upcoming engagement, left his father feeling helpless.

‘Policy Failure’

Following the tragedy, Opposition parties, particularly the Congress, demanded a State-wide on-ground survey. This should be conducted by the Agriculture Department to assess crop damage and financial relief for affected farmers. Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai condemned the incident as a policy failure, arguing that each farmer’s death reflected the government’s inaction. He urged the State government to grant ₹50 lakh in compensation to Yadav’s family and other affected farmers . He stated that another farmer had died under similar circumstances in Mahoba. In a letter to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Rai emphasized that the farming community urgently needs assistance and that these tragedies expose systemic shortcomings in addressing farmers’ crises.
