Germany puts Ukrainian on trial accused of blowing up Nord Stream pipelines

A Ukrainian military officer has gone on trial in Hamburg, Germany. He stands accused of orchestrating the sabotage of Russia’s Nord Stream gas pipelines in September 2022.

Specifically, German prosecutors allege that 50-year-old Serhii Kuznetsov led a team of deep-sea divers and explosives experts. According to the indictment, the group rented a yacht called Andromeda to carry out the attack on civilian infrastructure. Consequently, prosecutors have charged Kuznetsov under Germany’s international criminal code, treating the act as a war crime.

However, the defense team has strongly called for the dismissal of the case. Furthermore, Italian defense lawyer Nicola Canestrini highlighted that investigators found no direct forensic evidence, DNA, or fingerprints after a four-year investigation. In addition, the defense argues that the defendant’s military duty of secrecy prevents him from providing a full alibi.

Meanwhile, this trial creates significant geopolitical sensitivity between Berlin and Kyiv. On one hand, Germany remains one of Ukraine’s closest allies in the war against Russia. On the other hand, German prosecutors contend that the plot was executed under orders from Ukrainian state agencies. Nevertheless, Ukrainian officials maintain that Kyiv had no involvement in the sabotage.

Additionally, legal battles surrounding other suspects continue across Europe. For instance, a second suspect arrested in Croatia is currently fighting extradition. Conversely, a Polish court previously rejected a similar extradition request, ruling the action justified within the context of armed conflict.

Ultimately, German authorities aim to depoliticize the trial by leaving the matter entirely to the judicial system. Therefore, the outcome will test the legal standards surrounding wartime actions against critical energy infrastructure.
