China has officially started the 2026 APEC meetings in Guangzhou. Under the theme “Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together,” the host economy wants to improve regional ties. Specifically, they aim to speed up economic cooperation across the entire region.

From February 1 to 10, officials from 21 economies are meeting for the First Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM1). As a result, this gathering will define the trade and digital goals for the rest of the year.

Key Priorities: Openness, Innovation, and Cooperation

Ambassador Chen Xu explained that the agenda has three main pillars: openness, innovation, and cooperation. Furthermore, he stated that these goals show how the region wants to solve global problems together.

During these ten days, there will be about 60 different workshops. For example, the groups will focus on these important topics:

  • Digital Tools: They will study how to use artificial intelligence safely.
  • Sustainability: They plan to protect the oceans and improve food security.
  • Easier Trade: In addition, they want to modernize customs and use less paper in business.

Eduardo Pedrosa, from the APEC Secretariat, said that these meetings set the pace for the year. Consequently, the goal is to create more economic opportunities for everyone.

Moreover, the Trade and Investment Committee is working hard on the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP). At the same time, experts are looking for ways to stop corruption. Therefore, they hope to create a more transparent and fair environment for investors.

In conclusion, the event will end on February 10. After that, senior officials will share the final steps to build a more united and innovative Asia-Pacific community.
