On July 6, 2026, the Philippine Senate will convene as an impeachment court. This session marks the beginning of the historic trial for Vice President Sara Duterte. She is the first Philippine official to face an impeachment process twice. Consequently, the nation is turning its attention to the Senate. Here, senator-judges will evaluate the evidence regarding four major articles of impeachment.
The Articles of Impeachment
The complaints against the Vice President are based on four specific allegations. These claims represent serious breaches of public trust and legal standards. First, the articles include the alleged misuse of millions of pesos in confidential funds from the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education. Furthermore, the charges cover alleged unexplained wealth. The prosecution also notes a failure to disclose assets truthfully in her Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth from 2022 to 2024. Finally, the prosecution presents allegations of bribery and procurement irregularities. These charges also include reports of grave threats made against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the First Lady, and a former House Speaker.
Trial Structure and Expectations
The Senate impeachment court has established a rigorous schedule to manage the proceedings. In total, the court approved 92 trial days. House prosecutors have been allocated 62 trial dates to present their case. Meanwhile, the defense team has been granted 30 dates. Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian will preside over the trial. Additionally, the court has directed Vice President Duterte to appear either in person or through her legal counsel.
As the trial unfolds, the proceedings will test the strength of the evidence. They will also test the political resolve of the senator-judges. If convicted by a vote of at least two-thirds, Duterte faces immediate removal from office. Moreover, she would face perpetual disqualification from holding any future public office. Despite the intense political atmosphere, the trial stands as a significant moment for the Philippine democratic process.
