German police reported that the driver abandoned the vehicle after it crashed into a tree and fled the scene on foot, prompting a large-scale manhunt involving helicopters and officers from several federal states. Investigators later identified the suspected perpetrator as a member of Berlin’s Islamist scene, although no arrest had been made at the time of reporting. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and whether additional individuals were involved.
Leaders condemn the attack on the LGBTQ+ community.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged that those responsible would be identified and prosecuted, while Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner described the incident as an attack on the city’s values of freedom, diversity and inclusion. Participants expressed shock and sadness, noting that the violence overshadowed an event dedicated to equality and peaceful celebration. Organizers had chosen the 2026 theme, “Taking a stand is hot,” in response to growing hostility toward LGBTQ+ communities in Germany.

The attack occurred amid increasing concerns about public safety following several deadly vehicle and knife attacks in Germany in recent years.
