Sen. Bernie Sanders delivered a ferocious speech in Los Angeles. He urged California voters to confront economic inequality by backing a proposed wealth tax on the state’s billionaires. Speaking to a crowd at the Wiltern, Sanders accused the ultra-wealthy of greed, arrogance and acting as though they possess a “divine right” to rule. He framed the ballot initiative as a broader fight against oligarchy. Giving a warning that billionaires who resist higher taxes are “treading on very, very thin ice” in a democratic society.
The proposal, spearheaded by the Service Employees International Union–United Healthcare Workers West, would impose a one-time 5% tax on residents worth more than $1 billion. Supporters argue the measure would offset anticipated federal cuts to healthcare and fund public education and food assistance programs. Organizers must gather nearly 875,000 valid signatures to qualify the California Billionaire Tax Act for the November ballot. If approved, roughly 200 of California’s wealthiest residents would be affected.
The debate has divided Democrats in a state known for progressive politics. Gov. Gavin Newsom and other opponents warn that the tax could drive wealthy individuals out of California, erode the tax base and weaken the state’s economic competitiveness. Tech leaders have already mobilized against the measure. Sergey Brin and other billionaires are funding competing ballot initiatives designed to block or dilute the proposal.
Possible Consequences
A nonpartisan analysis from the California Legislative Analyst’s Office estimates the tax could generate tens of billions of dollars. Yet, they cautioned that revenue projections carry significant uncertainty, especially if wealthy residents relocate. Implementation would also pose challenges, including valuing complex assets such as private businesses and intellectual property.
Despite organized opposition, the measure retains notable public support. A January poll found 48% of likely voters in favor, 38% opposed and 14% undecided. Sanders cast the initiative as a defining test of democratic power. He’s been arguing that taxing billionaires would send a clear message that extreme wealth should not outweigh the needs of working families.
