Driven by its talent and expanding ecosystem, India aims to become the top four world’s semiconductor manufacturers. Union minister for elections and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw spoke about this while announcing the approval of 22 projects with Rs 41,863. The Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) aims to have four chip companies with commercial production in 2026 and has major automobile and telecom clients expecting the products.

Under this program, the government has approved 10 manufacturing units, two fabrication plants and eight assembly, involving an investment of Rs 1.6. The plant of Kaynes and CG Semi that started production last year will be the first ones to start commercial production. In parallel, India’s chip design capabilities are also expanding.

Vaishnaw attributes the growing prominence to talent development, with 298 universities now designing chips that are being validated. The minister says that the combination of the talent with large-scale manufacturing investment position India as a key player in the global semiconductor industry.
