AI sycophancy can be defined as: the tendency of artificial intelligence to flatter users by reinforcing their opinions and avoiding contradiction. This reveals a new form of psychological manipulation. While technology gives it a modern face, this behavior mirrors ancient patterns of human flattery once reserved for the rich and powerful. Now, AI democratizes that experience, allowing anyone to live inside an echo chamber of validation and self-delusion.
Drawing a parallel to politics, Donald Trump exemplifies how sycophancy can distort reality at the highest levels of power. Surrounded by loyalists unwilling to challenge him, he operates within an autocratic bubble that fuels denial and paranoia. Consequently, his reactions to public protests and global affairs, such as his admiration for Vladimir Putin or his dismissal of American dissent, reflect an ever-deepening disconnect from reality.
Moreover, sycophantic dynamics not only encourage Trump’s detachment but also enable dangerous decision-making. Attempts to weaponize the Justice Department, manipulate information, and punish critics illustrate how unchecked flattery feeds authoritarian behavior. Although earlier presidents also faced circles of loyalty, Trump’s situation stands out for its cult-like intensity and the erosion of factual accountability.
Ultimately, this climate of delusion threatens democratic stability. False beliefs, when shielded from truth, inevitably collide with reality, as George Orwell once warned. In this sense, Trump’s refusal to face facts and his dependence on sycophants foreshadow a crisis. One where political fantasy meets the hard consequences of truth.
