APEC economies are strengthening cooperation on science, technology and innovation as artificial intelligence reshapes economic growth across the Asia-Pacific region. Rapid advances in frontier technologies are creating new opportunities, while also intensifying shared and complex challenges. In this context, open innovation is increasingly seen as essential for sustaining long-term regional prosperity.
The Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation met in Guangzhou, bringing together policymakers, researchers and experts from across the region and the discussions emphasized cross-border knowledge flows, public–private collaboration and stronger policy coordination. These approaches aim to boost productivity while addressing digital inequality, sustainability and responsible technology governance.
Innovation is a key APEC priority in 2026, this reflects the region’s focus on inclusive and resilient growth. Economies examined AI policy, green and digital transitions, open science and researcher mobility as critical enablers of competitiveness. Strong innovation ecosystems were highlighted as central to strengthening regional integration.
Participants pointed up the importance of clear policy direction, measurable outcomes and sustained cooperation, while openness and collaboration were seen as vital for translating scientific advances into shared benefits. The meeting’s outcomes will guide future projects and policy recommendations across APEC economies.
