Google confirmed plans to merge Android and ChromeOS during the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii. Rick Osterloh revealed Google is building a common foundation for smartphones, PCs, and desktops.
Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said he has already seen the software and praised it as “incredible.” Osterloh emphasized Google’s strategy to bring Gemini and the Android AI stack into the PC domain. The move aims to unify Google’s AI, applications, and developer ecosystem across computing categories.
Amon highlighted the merger as a major step toward convergence between mobile devices and PCs.Google has struggled in the PC market, dominated by Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS.
ChromeOS was introduced as a lightweight, secure system for entry-level computers. Android apps were added to Chromebooks in 2016, but the platforms remained separate. Recent Android updates added desktop-friendly features like external display support and resizable windows.
Despite years of effort, ChromeOS holds only 7.3% of the PC market, IDC reported. Windows dominates with 79.8% market share, leaving Google far behind. For Qualcomm, Google’s PC push offers an opportunity to expand its Snapdragon chips beyond smartphones.
Snapdragon processors promise energy efficiency and long battery life in PCs. Currently, Snapdragon-powered laptops mostly run Microsoft Windows. Google’s Android-ChromeOS merger could help Qualcomm diversify its business into personal computers.
