In shadow of tariff, H-1B, Jaishankar and Rubio discuss issues of ‘current concern’

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met in New York, discussing bilateral and international issues following recent trade tensions and tariff increases.

Moreover, their hour-long meeting, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, was described as positive. Both sides agreed to maintain sustained engagement on priority areas.

Since their last face-to-face meeting in July, many developments occurred, including a collapsed trade deal and new H-1B visa fee hikes. This has led to complicated negotiations between both governments.

Therefore, the Jaishankar-Rubio dialogue aimed to establish political understanding. While Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and US counterparts continue technical-level negotiations toward a mutually beneficial trade agreement.

In addition, Jaishankar met US Ambassador nominee Sergio Gor, where both parties expressed commitment to advancing the US-India relationship. These officers were promoting cooperation across multiple regional and global issues.

Meanwhile, conversations between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi earlier in September signaled tentative progress. Since both leaders emphasized shared partnership despite disagreements over tariffs and Russian oil.

Furthermore, signs of easing tensions emerged with statements acknowledging the “special relationship” and pledging further negotiations to address trade barriers while securing long-term bilateral economic cooperation.

The Ministry of Commerce confirmed ongoing efforts to reach an early conclusion to the trade agreement, stressing constructive discussions during recent engagements with US negotiators in India.

At the same time, Jaishankar began his UNGA week with meetings, including discussions with Philippine Foreign Secretary Theresa Lazaro, reaffirming cooperation in political, defense, maritime, and regional affairs. Looking ahead,

Jaishankar will continue bilateral and multilateral meetings at the UNGA, while President Trump’s upcoming address is expected to influence international perspectives, including those in New Delhi.
