run SAP-operated infrastructure within their own data centers.
The goal is to ensure customer data stays within the EU, in compliance with regulations such as GDPR. SAP board member Thomas Saueressig said, “Innovation and sovereignty cannot be two separate things… it needs to come together.”
The move comes as the European Commission pushes to strengthen AI development and reduce reliance on foreign technologies. Earlier this year, the EU unveiled plans to invest €20 billion in “AI gigafactories”, massive facilities with supercomputers to support next-generation AI.
