“Tesla’s Europe sales crater 40% in July as BYD, competitors gain”

Tesla’s struggles in Europe worsened in July, with EV registrations dropping “40.2% year over year to just 8,837 units,” according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). This marked the “seventh straight month of declining Tesla sales in the European region,” even as total EV registrations across Europe rose 33.6%.

The decline was severe in key markets: France (down 27%), the Netherlands (down 62%), Denmark (down 52%), and Sweden (down 86%). Despite the introduction of the revamped Model Y, rising competition and “CEO Elon Musk’s deep unpopularity” have weighed on the brand.

Competitors, meanwhile, surged ahead. China’s BYD saw registrations climb 225% to 13,503 units, surpassing Tesla, while Volkswagen Group and BMW posted solid double-digit gains. Tesla also faced pressure in China, with sales down 8.4% in July.

In the U.S., however, demand appeared stronger, with reports of growing wait times for the Model Y as buyers rush to secure vehicles before the “$7,500 EV tax credit” expires on Sept. 30. Still, Musk cautioned after Q2 earnings that Tesla faces “a few rough quarters” ahead, especially with the launch of cheaper EV models postponed.
