North Korea fired a ballistic missile from its eastern port city of Wonsan into the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan on August 12, 2026. The missile traveled more than 700 kilometers (435 miles) before landing outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. This mark’s Pyongyang’s second missile test within a week and its eleventh suspected ballistic launch of the year. It occurred just days ahead of the annual joint US-South Korea Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises, scheduled for August 17–27. While Washington and Seoul assert that the maneuvers—involving nearly 18,000 South Korean troops and 28,500 US personnel—are defensive preparations against potential aggression. Still, Pyongyang consistently views them as rehearsals for an invasion and frequently responds with weapons demonstrations.
The launch unfolds against a backdrop of escalating regional tensions and expanding military programs since diplomatic talks between North Korea and the United States broke down in 2019. Tensions have been further heightened by North Korea’s growing defense cooperation with Russia. This including reports of North Korean troops and ballistic missiles being utilized in the conflict in Ukraine. As well as Pyongyang’s vocal opposition to defense initiatives by South Korea and Japan.
