A Visible Moment With a Modest National Footprint
Democratic socialist candidates recorded several notable victories during the 2026 primary season. These results followed Zohran Mamdani’s 2025 election as mayor of New York City. Together, the wins created the impression that the Democratic Socialists of America was becoming a major national faction.
Brookings tested that impression by identifying 282 candidates endorsed or recommended by official DSA chapters. Only 29 received support from the national organization because the movement operates through highly decentralized local chapters. The study therefore measures confirmed endorsements rather than all candidates who describe themselves as democratic socialists.
Most candidates pursued offices below the federal level. Ninety-nine ran locally, while 104 competed in state legislative primaries. Compared with the enormous number of local elections and state legislative seats nationwide, this remains a very small presence.
Success Remains Concentrated in Democratic Strongholds
Geography further limits the movement’s apparent reach. California accounted for 90 candidates and New York contributed 21. Many campaigns therefore took place in districts where Democrats already hold a strong advantage over Republicans.
Among candidates seeking statewide or congressional office, fewer than half won their primaries. Even in districts rated D+10 or more Democratic, DSA-backed contenders lost more often than they won. Only 10 prevailed in states or districts with a partisan lean below D+10.
High-profile victories still matter because they reveal dissatisfaction with the Democratic establishment. Young, charismatic candidates can mobilize voters frustrated with older officeholders and party leadership. However, those victories do not yet prove that democratic socialism can consistently succeed in competitive territory.
November Will Test the Movement’s Broader Appeal
The general election will determine whether left-wing nominees can expand beyond safe Democratic districts. Centrists worry that past radical statements could help Republicans defeat otherwise competitive candidates. Supporters instead believe nominees can moderate their positions and attract younger voters.
Several findings also require caution. Local chapters apply different endorsement standards, so DSA support does not guarantee identical ideology across the sample. Some backed candidates may resemble conventional progressives, while unendorsed democratic socialists were excluded from the count.
Ultimately, the summer’s results show political energy rather than nationwide dominance. Wins in swing districts would strengthen the movement within the Democratic coalition. Losses in winnable races could instead reduce its influence, especially if they cost the party control of Congress.
