A shipment of unserviceable F-35 fighter jet parts was mistakenly diverted to Hong Kong. The parts were traveling from Australia to the United States for repairs over the summer. However, the mishap triggered an investigation by U.S. lawmakers due to concerns about military technology security.
Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles confirmed the ongoing investigation. He stated that Australia is working closely with the U.S. Department of Defense and Lockheed Martin. Furthermore, Marles noted that no classified components were included in the shipment. He added that supply chain logistics fall under Lockheed Martin’s oversight.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon acknowledged the shipment issue. Officials confirmed they are working to retrieve the components and put safeguards in place. Additionally, Lockheed Martin affirmed its compliance with U.S. defense security regulations. On the other hand, Hong Kong authorities declined to comment on the incident.
The F-35 Lightning II is one of the world’s most advanced fighter aircraft. Consequently, it is operated by a select group of international partner nations, including Australia and the United States.
