Concerns About Emotional Attachment to AI
Prince Harry warned at the Clinton Global Initiative that companion chatbots may present greater dangers to young people than social media. He described artificial intelligence as more persuasive and intimate because it seeks emotional attachment instead of merely competing for attention.
His remarks expanded on warnings he delivered at the same conference in 2024. At that time, the Duke of Sussex linked social media to anxiety, depression and social isolation among young users.
Harry said rapid technological change has made the effort to protect children even more difficult. Although families and advocates have pushed institutions to recognize online harms, he argued that bans, legal settlements and financial payments remain incomplete solutions.
Efforts to Protect Children Online
Through their Archewell Foundation, Harry and Meghan created The Parents Network to support families affected by online harm. He said the initiative has made progress, but new forms of technology have added challenges to an already difficult campaign.
The discussion followed a major settlement involving Meta and claims that Facebook and Instagram contributed to teen social media addiction. The company agreed to pay up to $18 billion and strengthen safety protections for children on its platforms.
That case focused on features designed to keep young people engaged and their possible effects on mental health. Harry’s warning suggests that conversational systems may deepen the concern by entering personal relationships and encouraging users to form emotional bonds.
Broader Calls for AI Safeguards
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also raised concerns about artificial intelligence at the conference. She said President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping should discuss international agreements for addressing the technology’s risks.
LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman supported a proposed kill switch that would require developers to retain the ability to shut down their systems. He said companies would not naturally adopt such a mechanism, making outside intervention valuable.
Together, the comments reflected pressure for stronger protections as AI becomes more integrated into daily life. The speakers emphasized that voluntary corporate action alone may not adequately address risks involving children, personal relationships and systems that could become difficult to control.
