Investigation Into a Claimed Data Breach
The FBI is investigating claims that a criminal hacking group accessed its employment website and obtained sensitive personal information. The group said the alleged breach affected thousands of agents and people who had applied for jobs with the bureau.
Federal officials acknowledged a possible compromise of the FBIJobs.gov portal but said the point of entry remained unknown. Investigators are working with third-party providers that support the website to identify the cause and reduce potential risks.
The portal serves as the main source of information for prospective employees and allows them to begin the application process. It remained offline Wednesday afternoon while the investigation continued.
ShinyHunters Issues an Unverified Claim
In a message addressed to FBI Director Kash Patel and cyber division leader Brett Leatherman, ShinyHunters claimed responsibility. The group said it possessed sensitive information on nearly all FBI agents and job applicants, though its statements could not immediately be verified.
Hackers gave the bureau one week to correct or remove parts of a May public advisory about the organization. That FBI notice described ShinyHunters as a criminal group associated with major data breaches, extortion and exaggerated claims intended to pressure victims.
In response, ShinyHunters said its action was not financially motivated and rejected the FBI’s characterization. The message did not explain what the group would do if the bureau failed to meet its demand.
A Frequent Target of Cyberattacks
The FBI has faced other recent cybersecurity incidents. In March, it investigated suspicious activity involving an internal system that contained information connected to surveillance operations and investigations.
A pro-Iranian hacking group also claimed in March that it had accessed an account belonging to Patel. The FBI said the material released in that case was historical, included no government information and consisted largely of older personal documents and photographs.
The latest investigation therefore centers on both the reliability of ShinyHunters’ assertions and the security of a public-facing recruitment system. Until investigators determine what happened, the scope of any exposed information and the number of affected people remain uncertain.
