Elon Musk’s SpaceX set to be worth $1 trillion with planned public listing

SpaceX is preparing a confidential initial public offering that could value the company at more than $1 trillion, making it one of the most valuable publicly traded firms and potentially turning Elon Musk into the world’s first trillionaire. The company, founded in 2002 to reduce the cost of space launches through reusable rockets, now focuses largely on rocket production and the Starlink satellite network, which provides global internet connectivity.

The confidential filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission allows SpaceX to seek regulatory feedback without immediately disclosing full financial details, while the next phase will involve a “roadshow” to persuade major investors to buy shares, with the aim of raising $50 billion or more. Earlier in the year, SpaceX absorbed xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, in an all‑stock deal that helped make it the most valuable private company in the world, with an internal valuation of about $1.25 trillion. This move is part of a broader trend of Musk’s companies becoming more intertwined, as xAI previously took over X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, and Tesla has invested more than $2 billion in xAI while planning to shift a significant share of its manufacturing toward robots powered by xAI technology like the Grok chatbot, which is already integrated into some Tesla vehicles as an AI assistant.

Analysts argue that consolidating xAI under SpaceX highlights cost synergies and shared resources, while also underscoring SpaceX’s need for a massive cash infusion to keep up with the “sheer cost of compute, infrastructure, and energy” needed to expand its ambitions, which include AI data centers in space and even a self‑sufficient city on Mars, goals that many experts consider extremely difficult to achieve.
