Super-Potent Synthetic Opioids Spread Across US Amid Fentanyl Crackdown

This open-source investigation details the rapid proliferation of nitazenes. A little-known, unsafe class of synthetic opioids developed in the 1950s—across the United States. Up to 40 times more potent than fentanyl and 500 times stronger than heroin, nitazenes are flooding the US drug market. Largely as a consequence of traffickers shifting away from fentanyl following a 2019 regulatory ban by China.

Despite federal scheduling, undercover stings, and international tariffs, nitazenes have infiltrated 48 out of 50 US states. Experts note that official fatality counts (over 1,100 confirmed via CDC data). This are heavily underreported because few forensic laboratories are equipped to test for them. The state of Ohio has emerged as the national epicenter, accounting for over a third of all positive laboratory detections. A trend driven by its expansive transportation networks.

By the time nitazenes reach users, they are almost universally mixed with other substances like cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl. Street-level and mid-level dealers use encrypted communication channels to purchase these highly profitable chemicals. In small amounts via the clear and dark web, often from Chinese supply companies that evade customs by mislabeling the packages. Even though major dark web marketplaces have been dismantled and China implemented a national ban on most nitazenes in mid-2025. In addition, manufacturers are already exploiting chemical loopholes. By shifting production to a new, unregulated class of potent synthetic opioids known as “orphines.”

In conclusion, the rise of nitazenes demonstrates a highly adaptable, global drug supply chain that rapidly evolves to exploit regulatory loopholes. As enforcement pressures reduce fentanyl supplies. The introduction of even more potent synthetic alternatives poses an increasingly volatile and deadly threat to public health and law enforcement.
