European aerospace giant Airbus sells 55 aircraft Chinese airlines requested in a landmark transaction valued at $12.4 billion at list prices. Specifically, flag carrier Air China and its subsidiary Shenzhen Airlines filed announcements with the Shanghai Stock Exchange confirming the fleet expansion. Consequently, this major order reinforces the European manufacturer’s strong market position in the world’s second-largest aviation market. Furthermore, aviation analysts view this purchase as a significant step toward modernizing China’s civil transport infrastructure
Fleet Expansion Details for Air China and Shenzhen Airlines
Under the multi-billion-dollar agreement, Air China will acquire 15 widebody A350-900 passenger jets to support its long-haul international route network. Meanwhile, subsidiary Shenzhen Airlines will receive 40 narrowbody A320neo family aircraft designed for domestic and regional travel corridors. For example, deliveries for the single-aisle jets are scheduled between 2029 and 2032, while the widebody aircraft will arrive between 2030 and 2032.
In addition, company filings indicate that actual transaction prices remain lower than published catalog values due to substantial bulk discounts. Indeed, both carriers intend to finance the purchases through a combination of cash reserves, commercial loans, and specialized credit arrangements. Therefore, this fleet upgrade will increase total operating capacity by roughly seven percent for Air China while replacing older, less efficient passenger planes across key regional domestic routes
Strengthening Market Leadership in Asian Civil Aviation
Beyond expanding passenger capacity, the deal highlights growing demand for fuel-efficient aircraft across Asian commercial aviation markets. Furthermore, as Airbus sells 55 aircraft Chinese airlines selected for long-term fleet strategy, the European planemaker continues to outperform global competitors across the region. Ultimately, these incoming airliners will lower unit operating costs and support long-term sustainable aviation goals.
