Anthropic has made a strategic expansion to India, an effort to strengthen its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing artificial intelligence markets. The US-based AI firm has opened its first Indian office in Bengaluru, marking its second Asian location after Tokyo. This move reflects the rapid rise in AI adoption across India, where Anthropic reports that its annualized revenue has doubled since October.
India has become a competitive battleground for global AI companies. Firms such as OpenAI and Perplexity already offer free or simplified chatbot services to attract Indian users, intensifying competition. However, Anthropic is positioning itself differently. Rather than focusing primarily on mass consumer adoption and data generation, the company is prioritizing enterprise clients. India is already the second-largest market for Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude. Nearly half of its usages are tied to mathematical and computer-related tasks such as coding and software development.
Anthropic plans to deepen its enterprise outreach by targeting both large corporations and startups. Its Bengaluru office is currently hiring sales professionals, signaling a clear emphasis on business development. Major organizations such as Tata Group’s Air India and Cognizant are already using Claude to accelerate software development and improve efficiency. These partnerships illustrate how AI tools are increasingly embedded in corporate workflows.
AI Disruption and the Possible Consequences
At the same time, the expansion raises broader concerns about the future of employment. Advanced AI agents threaten traditional outsourcing models that depend on billing clients based on workforce size. Industry experts suggest that companies like TCS and Infosys could face disruption if AI-driven automation replaces conventional software development processes. However, they may still find opportunity by reinventing business operations and leveraging AI to deliver more innovative solutions.
Beyond enterprise growth, Anthropic also aims to localize its technology by strengthening support for ten Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, and Malayalam. By improving linguistic capabilities, the company hopes to expand access to AI tools and better serve India’s diverse population. Overall, Anthropic’s India expansion is both a growth opportunity and a catalyst for transformation within the country’s technology and outsourcing sectors.
