Billionaire Leon Black filed a federal lawsuit against a United States House committee on Thursday. The lawsuit challenges congressional subpoenas linked to Jeffrey Epstein.
Specifically, Leon Black missed a scheduled deposition before the House Oversight Committee. Because lawmakers requested non-disclosure agreements, legal tensions escalated rapidly. Consequently, committee members threatened contempt proceedings against the Apollo Global Management co-founder.
Attorneys for Leon Black defended the legal action against Capitol Hill. For this reason, defense lawyer Susan Estrich criticized the panel’s broad evidence search.
However, Democratic Representative Robert Garcia urged Congress to issue contempt charges immediately. In fact, full House approval remains necessary before forwarding cases to federal prosecutors. Therefore, political observers doubt whether Republican leaders will push for a full floor vote.
The congressional panel issued multiple subpoenas to prominent public figures in recent months. Indeed, high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton and Bill Gates received official deposition requests.
Meanwhile, lawmakers introduced new transparency legislation to unseal confidential Department of Justice files. Furthermore, advocacy groups continue demanding full disclosure regarding Epstein’s network. As a result, federal courts must evaluate congressional oversight limits against individual privacy rights.
