A New Channel for AI Safety
China and the United States agreed to create a communication mechanism for incidents involving artificial intelligence. The channel will address risks and benefits, with a dedicated bilateral dialogue scheduled for November.
The planned discussions followed a three-day summit between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump in Washington. Trump said cooperation would have limits and insisted that the United States would not slow its technological progress or broadly share its advantages.
Trade Cooperation Continues
Both governments agreed to keep working through a Board of Trade focused on selected bilateral issues. They also extended their trade truce for two months and continued efforts to reduce reciprocal tariffs on approximately $30 billion in goods.
China agreed to import at least 10 million metric tons of American coal in both 2027 and 2028. Most planned tariff reductions cover non-sensitive products, including agricultural goods and holiday decorations.
Rare earth supplies remained another priority. The White House said negotiations would seek to restore shipments to appropriate levels after Chinese export controls reduced supplies sent abroad.
Military and Diplomatic Engagement Expands
Beyond trade, the countries will sign a memorandum aimed at strengthening military crisis communications. The agreement is intended to prevent incidents between their armed forces from escalating into wider confrontations.
Further commitments addressed Iran, international waterways and fentanyl. Both governments said Iran should not develop nuclear weapons and opposed tolls on international waterways. Washington also welcomed China’s controls on two additional chemicals used to produce fentanyl.
Analysts noted that the summit delivered no major breakthrough and left fundamental disputes unresolved. Still, the working groups and military dialogue could make stability more durable. Xi and Trump also agreed to meet at the APEC summit in Shenzhen and later at the G20 gathering in Florida.
