Export Growth Reaches a New Scale
China exported more passenger cars during the first eight months of 2026 than during all of 2025. August shipments rose 67.1% from the previous year to about 890,000 vehicles. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said plug-in hybrids and fully electric cars drove the increase.
From January through August, passenger vehicle exports exceeded 6.2 million units. By comparison, China exported about 6 million passenger cars during 2025. Total vehicle exports reached 7.1 million that year. S&P Global Ratings now expects full-year passenger vehicle exports to grow between 50% and 70%.
Domestic Sales Continue to Weaken
Despite the export boom, China’s passenger car sales at home fell 25.6% in August from a year earlier. Monthly sales dropped to slightly below 1.5 million vehicles. Intense competition, aggressive price cuts, and the slowing economy have weakened consumer confidence in the domestic market.
Stephen Chan of S&P Global Ratings said Chinese exports have performed better than expected because manufacturers offer competitive prices and quality. He believes overseas growth will largely offset weaker domestic demand. Meanwhile, higher fuel prices following the Iran war have encouraged more drivers to consider electric vehicles. Many are shifting away from gasoline or diesel models.
Automakers Expand Beyond Vehicle Exports
High tariffs have effectively kept most Chinese passenger vehicles out of the United States. However, manufacturers are increasing sales across Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. These markets are becoming more important as companies search for growth beyond China’s crowded and increasingly difficult domestic market.
Chinese automakers are also building more factories abroad. Morgan Stanley analysts said weak local demand gives producers a stronger reason to redirect capacity overseas. Companies are moving from simple exports toward local assembly and manufacturing. This approach can reduce transportation expenses and limit the effects of trade barriers in foreign markets.
