Mistral, a leading European artificial intelligence provider based in Paris, secured 830 million dollars in new debt financing to purchase 13,800 Nvidia chips and support the development of a large-scale data centre near Paris, reinforcing Europe’s efforts to expand AI infrastructure against competition from the United States and China. This first debt raise for the startup was arranged by a consortium of seven banks, including BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, HSBC and MUFG, signalling strong financial-sector confidence in its growth prospects and technological strategy. The data centre, located in Bruyères-le-Châtel, is planned to become operational in the second quarter of 2026, marking a significant step in the company’s physical infrastructure expansion across the region.
Mistral chose the Bruyères-le-Châtel site in February 2025 and subsequently announced plans for a second facility in Sweden, with the aim of securing 200 megawatts of data centre capacity across Europe by the end of 2027. According to chief executive Arthur Mensch, “Scaling our infrastructure in Europe is critical to empower our customers and to ensure AI innovation and autonomy remain at the heart of Europe,” highlighting the company’s focus on technological sovereignty and customer empowerment within the European market. The startup already supplies AI models to the French armed forces and positions itself as a European alternative to dominant U.S. technology groups such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon, offering both AI models and infrastructure services for governments and enterprises seeking greater independence from non-European cloud and AI providers.
