Advancing Ocean Sustainability and Regional Cooperation
APEC members gathered in Gyeongju to discuss joint action on rising sea levels, pollution, and illegal fishing across borders. This meeting prepared the groundwork for the 5th Ocean-Related Ministerial Meeting in Busan, renewing high-level focus on ocean governance after a decade.
Shared principles emphasize connectivity, innovation and prosperity as pillars for stronger marine resource stewardship. Roadmaps now guide coordinated efforts to reduce marine debris, combat illegal fishing, and support sustainable aquaculture and small-scale fisheries.
Members also agreed to share marine data and explore advanced tools for monitoring and managing ocean health. These technologies include satellite monitoring and AI, which help forecast changes and enhance responsiveness to environmental shifts.
Support for small-scale fishers and empowerment of women in fisheries are highlighted as essential for inclusive blue economic growth. The collective approach underscores that no single economy can tackle ocean challenges alone; cross-border cooperation is critical.
Innovation, Resilience, and Ocean-Centered Growth
The Busan meeting motif, “Navigating Our Blue Future,” signals a commitment to innovation and shared prosperity. Member economies see renewed ministerial dialogue as a chance to align policy and institutional collaboration across the Asia-Pacific.
Strong participation from all members was encouraged to make the gathering impactful and actionable. Implementing strategic roadmaps aims to protect marine biodiversity while also strengthening coastal economic resilience.
Harnessing marine data supports better climate adaptation strategies for rising seas and severe weather events. Advanced technological solutions are seen as central to reducing illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing activities.
Inclusive policies are meant to ensure economic benefits reach diverse communities throughout the blue economy. Overall, the APEC region aims to unify efforts for marine health, shared prosperity, and resilient ocean governance.
