Germany officially accused Russia of orchestrating a drone attack at Leipzig airport. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt confirmed the findings on Tuesday.
Specifically, investigators discovered a drone carrying explosives near Ukrainian cargo aircraft. However, the device failed to detonate due to a faulty trigger. Because of this incident, Germany is taking swift diplomatic measures against Moscow. Consequently, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul ordered the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn.
Diplomatic Sanctions and Hybrid Warfare Concerns
Government officials emphasized that the attack follows a clear pattern of Russian hybrid operations across Europe. For this reason, Germany will enforce stricter entry controls for Russian citizens.
In direct response to the hybrid attack, Germany announced immediate diplomatic and economic retaliatory actions. Foreign Minister Wadephul confirmed the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the termination of the Russian House lease in Berlin, an entity long suspected of intelligence operations. Additionally, Berlin is tightening border control protocols for Russian nationals and increasing maritime pressure against Russia’s shadow tanker fleet. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova rejected the allegations, accusing Berlin of sponsoring terrorism through military aid to Kyiv and promising reciprocal countermeasures.
The accusation comes at a critical time for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, whose administration faces rising geopolitical tensions alongside domestic political pressures in eastern state elections. Security experts emphasize that Leipzig Airport remains a vital strategic hub for both the German military and NATO allies. Consequently, European Union leadership and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte publicly backed Germany, signaling that additional EU sanctions against Moscow are currently under development to counter ongoing hybrid warfare across the continent.
