Federal funds finance campaign style advertisements
The Department of Homeland Security committed $20 million in taxpayer money to advertisements praising President Donald Trump. The funds came from legislation supporting Trump’s immigration and deportation agenda. Democratic senators said the money was originally intended for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Sens. Patty Murray and Chris Murphy demanded answers from Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin within 48 hours. They requested contracting details and asked whether the department planned additional advertisements. The senators also questioned whether Mullin discussed using the funds with Trump.
Advertisements face bipartisan and legal criticism
The commercials resemble political campaign messages and repeat themes used by Republicans before the midterm elections. Experts said they may violate restrictions on using congressional appropriations for propaganda. Unlike traditional public service announcements, the ads do not help people access a specific government program.
Meanwhile, Republican senators Thom Tillis and John Thune criticized the use of taxpayer money. The White House defended the commercials as public service announcements that identify the U.S. government as their funder. Homeland Security referred questions about the senators’ letter to that response.
Contract details increase scrutiny before the midterms
AdImpact reported that more than $2.5 million was spent on three advertisements during seven days. The final amount could be higher depending on how networks classified the commercials. One advertisement closely resembles a black-and-white video from Trump’s 2024 campaign.
House Democrats said budget director Russ Vought moved $20 million from Homeland Security resources on September 19. The following day, LMD Agency received a contract for a national media campaign. Democrats promised investigations if they regain control of Congress, while the administration showed no sign of changing course.
