Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega aims to bar ‘traitors’ from future elections

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega submitted a sweeping draft constitutional reform aimed at banning opposition members labeled as “traitors” and “coup-plotters” from participating in future democratic processes. Reporting by Al Jazeera details how the legislative proposal, presented to the National Assembly by Congress President Gustavo Porras, also seeks to extend the presidential mandate from six to seven renewable years. Consequently, human rights organizations and international observers warn that these measures further consolidate single-party authoritarian rule under Ortega and Co-President Rosario Murillo.

Legislative Changes and Electoral Exclusions

The latest constitutional initiative follows public statements made by Ortega declaring that traditional electoral contests would no longer permit opposition parties to challenge state power. By legally defining political dissidents, activists, and civic leaders as national traitors, the government creates a permanent statutory mechanism to bar political opponents from public office.

“We need laws that build a wall, a barrier, against the coup plotters and the traitors who sell out their country,” declared Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega.

Specifically, the reform builds upon previous constitutional amendments that stripped hundreds of political exiles and dissidents of their Nicaraguan citizenship and property rights.

International Backlash and Diplomatic Condemnation

Furthermore, the Organization of American States (OAS) convened emergency sessions to evaluate the dismantling of democratic norms across the country. Diplomatic representatives from the United States and the European Union signaled potential additions to targeted sanctions against senior Sandinista officials.

Therefore, institutionalizing political exclusions deepens the nation’s international isolation and economic strain. Moving forward, the National Assembly’s planned vote in September will officially entrench the new governance structure.
