The Airstrikes and Casualties
Currently, Pakistani fighter jets executed planned airstrikes against suspected militant hideouts inside eastern Afghanistan. Specifically, Pakistani authorities announced that these targeted strikes successfully killed 28 militants near the shared border. Furthermore, officials in Kabul and the United Nations reported that three civilians died during the bombings. Consequently, Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry immediately summoned Pakistan’s chargé d’affaires to lodge a formal protest. Ultimately, this renewed military aggression threatens to escalate cross-border hostilities and severely complicate regional mediation efforts.
Militant Attacks and Pakistani Justification
Meanwhile, these strikes follow multiple deadly militant attacks on Pakistani security forces. For instance, a devastating suicide bombing recently struck a police compound in the Pakistani city of Kohat. In addition, a separate shootout in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province killed six Pakistani security personnel. Indeed, authorities in Islamabad directly blame the Pakistani Taliban for orchestrating this surging violence. Therefore, Pakistan warned it would decisively eliminate terrorist threats allegedly sheltered within Afghan territory.
Afghan Denial and Diplomatic Fallout
Moreover, the Afghan government vehemently condemned the airstrikes as a clear violation of national sovereignty. In fact, an Afghan government spokesman warned that their forces will deliver a fitting response soon. Similarly, Afghan officials categorically rejected allegations that recent Pakistani security incidents originated from Afghan soil. However, Pakistan continues demanding that Kabul take verifiable measures to dismantle militant sanctuaries immediately. Ultimately, the United Nations urges both nations to respect international humanitarian law to prevent civilian casualties.
