Trump Warns Europe Over Canada
President Donald Trump said the European Union’s possible decision to grant Canada associate membership could represent a hostile act. His remarks directly challenged the proposed closer relationship between Canada and the European bloc.
Trump did not describe every version of the proposal as unacceptable. Instead, he said the American response would depend on European leaders’ intentions.
Tariffs Become the Main Threat
If the arrangement reflected good intentions, Trump said it would be acceptable. A negative intention, however, could bring very heavy American tariffs on Europe.
The president also suggested that the United States could stop trading with Europe in selected sectors. He did not identify which industries might face restrictions.
These warnings placed trade policy at the center of his response. Additional tariffs would become the main tool for opposing an arrangement viewed as harmful.
Canada Receives Sharp Criticism
Beyond criticizing Europe, Trump dismissed the possibility of Canada joining the EU as laughable. He also described the neighboring country as a terrible trade partner.
His comments connected the membership proposal with trade relations involving the United States, Canada, and Europe. Any future response would depend on how Washington interprets the plan.
