Inflation Moves Further Above Target
Official figures showed that inflation in the United Kingdom reached a five-month high in August. The consumer price index rose to 3.1% from 2.9% in July.
Higher gasoline prices and airfares were the main causes of the increase, according to the Office for National Statistics. Inflation therefore moved further above the Bank of England’s 2% target.
Energy costs have climbed since the war in Iran disrupted oil and gas markets. The Strait of Hormuz has remained largely closed to traffic since the conflict began.
The Bank Maintains a Cautious Approach
Policymakers are still widely expected to leave the central bank’s main interest rate at 3.75% after their Thursday meeting. The nine-member committee remains concerned about longer-term inflation pressures.
Officials want to determine whether higher prices will lead workers to demand larger pay increases. For now, a weak labor market is limiting wage growth and reducing immediate pressure.
Economist Suren Thiru said August’s reading probably would not produce an immediate rate hike. However, it could strengthen the Bank’s hawkish tone and support an increase later this year.
Interest rates had been declining from a 15-year high of 5.25% before the United States and Israel attacked Iran in February. Rising energy prices then changed the outlook.
Pressure on Borrowers and Public Finances
Rising expectations for interest rates affect personal loans and mortgages, increasing financial pressure on British households. More expensive borrowing could add to existing concerns about living costs.
Higher rates also create difficulties for the government because debt-service expenses consume a larger share of public spending. That burden complicates decisions ahead of the annual budget statement.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham argued that the economy continues to show broad resilience. He also said the upcoming budget would emphasize prudence and avoid risks to living standards.
