Chevron’s Multi-Billion Dollar Investment
Currently, U.S. oil giant Chevron confirmed a major expansion of its operations in Venezuela. Specifically, this strategic expansion follows President Donald Trump’s ambitious deal to actively develop the nation’s massive oil reserves. Furthermore, the company received additional acreage in the Orinoco Belt, where it already maintains active operations. Consequently, Chevron plans to invest more than $7 billion over the next five years to revitalize its infrastructure. Ultimately, this enormous financial commitment aims to double daily production from its 2026 level to approximately 600,000 barrels.
Industry Skepticism and Legal Concerns
However, analysts and legal observers remain highly skeptical about the long-term viability of this sudden arrangement. For instance, experts question whether acting president Delcy Rodríguez holds the legal authority to grant 100-year rights over 17 oil fields. In addition, the Cato Institute noted that Venezuela’s constitution requires explicit National Assembly approval for such contracts, which has not happened. Meanwhile, despite the administration’s push to get other U.S. businesses back into the country, major competitors refuse to re-enter. Indeed, an ExxonMobil spokesman reiterated the company’s previous position that Venezuela remains completely uninvestable at this time.
Infrastructure Reality and Domestic Price Pressures
In fact, Venezuela currently possesses the world’s largest proven oil reserves, totaling more than 303 billion barrels. Nevertheless, decades of severe neglect and international sanctions have left the local energy infrastructure heavily degraded, severely limiting daily output. Therefore, industry specialists strongly warn that restoring production will require tens of billions of dollars and years of restoration work. Moreover, while the White House claims this arrangement will substantially lower domestic fuel costs, American consumer prices recently increased. Ultimately, the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline jumped overnight to $4.12, reflecting ongoing market pressures.
