Wall Street week ahead: Federal Reserve decision on interest rates, retail sales update

The Federal Reserve Takes Center Stage

Investors will focus on the Federal Reserve as policymakers conclude their two-day meeting Wednesday. The central bank could raise its benchmark interest rate to restrain persistent inflation.

At more than 3%, inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target. Officials had kept rates steady while monitoring price pressures and the broader economy.

Retail Sales Will Test Consumer Strength

Wednesday’s August retail sales report will offer another measure of economic conditions. It will show how consumers are spending amid higher inflation and slower wage growth.

Households face pressure from rising gasoline prices, which directly increase transportation expenses. Higher fuel costs also affect budgets indirectly by making product deliveries more expensive.

Oil Prices Complicate the Policy Outlook

Conflict involving the United States and Iran has disrupted oil supplies and helped keep inflation elevated. The Strait of Hormuz has essentially closed during the conflict. Before fighting began in February, about one-fifth of global oil moved through the passage.

Although Wall Street expects at least one rate increase by year-end, the Fed faces competing pressures. Higher borrowing costs can slow growth and cool inflation. President Donald Trump wants lower rates, which could stimulate the economy but also intensify price increases.
