High-stakes diplomatic negotiations regarding Witkoff Kushner Putin meeting US peace talks Ukraine developments concluded in Russia on Wednesday. US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg to push for a diplomatic end to the war in Ukraine. During the summit, Moscow agreed in principle to resume US-mediated peace discussions alongside releasing a detained American citizen.

Resumption of Trilateral Peace Negotiations

Following the high-level meeting at Constantine Palace, Kremlin officials confirmed that Russia agreed to resume technical-level peace talks with Ukraine and the United States. US and Ukrainian officials previously discussed the framework during emergency meetings in Oslo. Potential negotiations are slated to begin next month in Abu Dhabi, focusing on post-conflict security arrangements for both nations.

Concurrently, the diplomatic push unfolds as Ukrainian leaders express concern over shifting American support. Because Washington recently relaxed energy sanctions against Moscow and called for new diplomatic approaches, European and Ukrainian officials continue monitoring US negotiations closely.

The St. Petersburg meeting began with Russia releasing Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old retired American teacher who had been detained in Russia since 2022. Following the release, US President Donald Trump stated that Moscow did not request a prisoner swap, citing respect for US diplomatic efforts.

However, Envoy Steve Witkoff sparked intense bipartisan criticism after publicly praising Putin as a “humanitarian” during the conference. American lawmakers and human rights advocates swiftly condemned the remarks, citing Russia’s ongoing military actions in Ukraine. Nonetheless, White House officials defended Witkoff’s diplomatic conduct, emphasizing that securing the release of an American detainee remained the primary operational objective.

Furthermore, discussions during the summit touched on a potential trilateral meeting between President Trump, President Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the upcoming APEC summit in China.
