The New Temperature Record
The contiguous United States officially sizzled to its hottest month ever recorded last month. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), July averaged 76.89 degrees Fahrenheit across the Lower 48 states. Consequently, this unprecedented heat narrowly eclipsed the previous Dust Bowl record set in July 1936. While Alaska experienced unusually cool weather, hotter-than-normal conditions completely blanketed the rest of the nation. In fact, the excessive heat was so widespread that every single Lower 48 state registered at least 1 degree Fahrenheit warmer than its 20th-century average.
Climate Change and Dust Bowl Comparisons
Meteorologists actively warn that exceeding records from the catastrophic Dust Bowl era means the country is in deep trouble. However, the historic heat during the 1930s was highly concentrated in the Midwest and heavily aggravated by poor agricultural practices. Today, scientists firmly state that the current extreme heat is directly driven by human-caused climate change from burning coal, oil, and gas. Furthermore, experts note that these extremely high temperatures are absolutely consistent with the intense drought and severe fire conditions spreading across the continent.
The Danger of Rising Nighttime Lows
Interestingly, the biggest driver of this new historic record was exceptionally warm nighttime temperatures. These rising nighttime lows smashed the old mark for hottest minimums by 0.7 degrees. Scientists widely consider hotter nights to be a classic, undeniable signature of human-caused climate change. Ultimately, this lack of overnight cooling creates incredibly dangerous conditions for human health. When nighttime temperatures fail to drop, the human body loses critical time to readjust and recover from severe daytime heat stress.
