The entry of the Houthi movement into the ongoing military conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. In. short, introduces a severe destabilizing element to regional security and global energy markets. Following months of escalating tensions, fresh Houthi maritime and cross-border strikes have targeted commercial shipping in the Bab al-Mandab. Also, energy infrastructure and airfields inside Saudi Arabia. This involvement was triggered in part by direct flights between Tehran and Sanaa that transported military personnel and supplies to Houthi-controlled territory. In addition, prompting retaliatory Saudi airstrikes on Yemeni airport infrastructure.
The operational expansion by the Houthis poses a critical threat to Saudi Arabia’s economic strategy and energy export routes. While the closure of the Strait of Hormuz previously forced Gulf energy exports toward Red Sea routes. Continuously, Houthi naval blockades and missile strikes in the Bab al-Mandab now endanger both primary Gulf maritime chokepoints simultaneously. Complicating diplomatic resolution, the Houthis operate as an ideology-driven, semi-autonomous actor rather than a fully subordinate proxy, meaning broader political agreements with Tehran may not curb their attacks. In response, Saudi Arabia has formed a 14-nation regional naval coalition to protect Red Sea shipping. Although key allies like the United States remain hesitant to open a dedicated military front against the Houthis due to concerns over rising oil prices and further conflict expansion.
The widening scope of Houthi military actions severely undermines regional stability and economic security in the Gulf. By threatening the remaining viable maritime trade routes and targeting vital infrastructure, the Houthi escalation exposes deep strategic vulnerabilities for regional states. Ultimately, creating a complex multi-front conflict that resists traditional diplomatic containment.
