Calls for Strategic Autonomy
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on South Korea to exercise genuine strategic autonomy on Thursday. Specifically, he urged Seoul to develop relations with Beijing and Washington in parallel. Wang told South Korean national security adviser Wi Sung-lac that Seoul should avoid bloc confrontation. Furthermore, he emphasized that lasting peace requires addressing the core causes of conflict on the Korean peninsula. Consequently, China hopes all regional parties will take concrete actions to restart dialogue and restore mutual trust.
Bilateral Thaw and Economic Cooperation
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung told Wang that he looks forward to elevating bilateral ties. Specifically, Lee plans to attend the upcoming Apec leaders’ meeting in Shenzhen this November. Both sides actively hailed the improving public perception and growing expectations for bilateral cooperation. In response, Wang urged South Korea to maintain a friendly and pragmatic China policy. Additionally, he called for accelerating negotiations on the second phase of the China-South Korea free trade agreement. Under Lee’s administration, Seoul has steadily pivoted toward pragmatic engagement with Beijing.
Alliance Friction and North Korea Dynamics
Wang’s high-level diplomatic visit coincides with notable friction within the US-South Korea security alliance. Joint annual military drills were recently shortened by six days at the request of the Trump administration. Furthermore, President Donald Trump linked this scaling back to his rapport with Kim Jong-un and frustration over Seoul’s foreign policy. Trump actively seeks another summit with North Korea to revive nuclear talks. However, Pyongyang remains skeptical of Washington’s overtures while demanding recognition as a permanent nuclear state.
