Malaysia’s Anwar to visit China

Malaysia’s Anwar to visit China next month with an eye on building trade ties

Upcoming Diplomatic Visit to China

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is planning an official visit to China next month. Consequently, the Southeast Asian nation aims to deepen bilateral trade ties with Beijing. The planned three-day trip in late September includes scheduled stops in Shanghai and Hangzhou. During the visit, Anwar expects to attend the Global Digital Trade Expo. Furthermore, the Malaysian leader will hold high-level economic talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. This trip does not include a stop in Beijing.

Strengthening Bilateral Economic Relations

The upcoming visit builds directly on ongoing efforts to strengthen relations between both nations. China remains Malaysia’s largest and most important trading partner. Last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Malaysia to boost strategic cooperation. Later, Anwar traveled to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit and a major military parade. During previous high-level meetings, Chinese officials highlighted that Beijing regards Malaysia as an absolute priority in its neighborhood diplomacy.

Controversial Remarks Regarding Taiwan

Meanwhile, Anwar’s recent comments on Taiwan drew significant international attention and praise from Beijing. During an interview, the prime minister explicitly affirmed that he views Taiwan as part of China. Additionally, he stated he would defend national unity if a Malaysian province attempted to secede. Taiwan’s foreign ministry quickly rejected these remarks and urged Malaysia to uphold democratic values. In response, Beijing’s foreign ministry commended Anwar’s steadfast commitment to the one-China principle.
