US President Donald Trump described his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping as “very productive” during Xi’s three-day state visit to Washington, DC. The two leaders discussed artificial intelligence (AI), trade and the war in Iran, while also seeking greater stability in US-China relations.
Trump confirmed that the two leaders discussed the war in Iran but did not provide details. He also said they would meet twice more this year: in November in China and at the G20 summit in December in Miami, Florida.
Xi invited Trump and his wife to visit China. He described the US-China relationship as one of “strategic stability” based on respect, fairness and reciprocity. Xi’s visit was his first trip to the United States in more than a decade.
AI and technology
Artificial intelligence was an important part of the discussions. Trump said that cooperation between the two countries on AI could produce significant developments. He also used the term “super intelligence” to describe the technology.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said that creating communication channels between Washington and Beijing on AI is one of the main challenges. He compared the need for communication to the direct contacts that existed between the US and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
However, the talks did not include discussions about the sale of certain advanced US-made computer chips to China. Greer described these chips as critical to maintaining the US position in the AI race.
A relationship still marked by competition
The meeting took place after Washington and Beijing agreed to extend a temporary trade truce, reducing immediate pressure from their long-running tariff dispute. However, major differences remain over trade, technology, Taiwan, AI and Iran.
The talks show that the United States and China are maintaining direct communication despite their broader strategic competition. Both governments have continued to discuss ways to manage disagreements while keeping economic and diplomatic channels open.
For now, Trump and Xi are expected to meet again later this year. Their next meetings could provide opportunities to continue discussions on trade, AI and other areas of disagreement between the two countries.
