Iran has proposed a seven-day roadmap to end its conflict with the United States and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi presented the proposal in New York on September 24, during the United Nations General Assembly. The plan is based on a memorandum of understanding reached by Washington and Tehran in June.
Iran’s seven-day plan
The proposal calls for an immediate halt to fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon. In return, the United States would lift its naval blockade, remove oil sanctions and release frozen Iranian assets.
If these conditions are met, Iran says the Strait of Hormuz could reopen within seven days. After that, negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme would resume.
Araghchi said the process could begin as soon as Washington accepts the proposal. However, the two sides still disagree on how the negotiations should proceed. Iran wants to address the blockade, sanctions and the Strait of Hormuz first. The United States wants broader talks that also include Iran’s nuclear programme.
Why the Strait of Hormuz matters
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes. Large amounts of oil and gas pass through it every day.
The conflict has disrupted the route and increased pressure on governments to find a diplomatic solution. For Iran, reopening the strait is directly linked to the lifting of US sanctions and the naval blockade.
Diplomatic efforts continue
The proposal comes after indirect US-Iran talks in New York, with Qatar acting as a mediator. The two countries have continued communicating, but they have not reached a final agreement.
A previous agreement in June also called for a temporary halt in fighting and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, the agreement later collapsed as tensions increased.
Iran’s new roadmap is an attempt to restart negotiations and reduce the conflict. For the plan to move forward, Washington and Tehran would need to reach an agreement on several key issues.
These include the US blockade, economic sanctions, the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme.
