Google to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic as search giant spreads its AI bets

Google’s planned investment of up to $40 billion in Anthropic reflects an aggressive effort to secure computing power and strengthen its position in the intensifying race for advanced artificial intelligence. The deal includes an immediate $10 billion injection at Anthropic’s latest $380 billion valuation, while the remaining $30 billion depends on the startup meeting specific performance milestones, signaling confidence in continued growth and commercial traction.

This agreement builds on a preexisting partnership under which Anthropic recently secured 5 gigawatts of computing capacity through a joint announcement with Google and Broadcom, with the option to add more capacity as demand expands. Anthropic’s Claude models are already integrated into Google Cloud, where they sit alongside custom tensor processing units that offer an alternative to Nvidia’s graphics chips, even as Google’s own Gemini model directly competes with Anthropic in the broader AI market.

The new funding comes amid unprecedented capital flows into frontier AI labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic, where tech giants are committing tens of billions of dollars in exchange for both equity stakes and long‑term cloud and infrastructure revenue. The relationship between Google and Anthropic dates back to 2023, when Google first invested $300 million for about a 10% stake, followed by additional commitments that lifted its holding to roughly 14% and total investment above $3 billion before this latest deal.

Anthropic has faced “inevitable strain” on its infrastructure due to surging enterprise, developer, and consumer demand for Claude, while rival OpenAI has criticized the company’s ability to secure sufficient compute. A recent agreement with Amazon, involving an initial $5 billion and up to $20 billion more tied to “certain commercial milestones,” mirrors the Google structure and underscores how multiple hyperscalers are competing to anchor Anthropic’s AI workloads.
