‘Witch-hunt’ in Niger as military regime rounds up LGBTQ+ population.

Niger has launched a crackdown on LGBTQ+ people following the introduction of a new penal code earlier this year. According to local media, authorities have arrested up to 40 people, while 16 men, including senior military officials, have been imprisoned. As a result, human rights advocates describe the current situation as a “witch-hunt” that has forced many LGBTQ+ individuals into hiding.

New law criminalises same-sex relationships.

The penal code, enacted in February 2026, criminalises same-sex relations for the first time in Niger’s history. Under the new legislation, people found guilty of same-sex relationships can receive prison sentences of up to 10 years and fines of up to 100 million CFA francs. In addition, anyone involved in organising, attending or supporting LGBTQ+ organisations or same-sex marriages may face prison terms of up to 20 years and substantial financial penalties.

Health services disrupted amid growing fears.

The new measures have also affected public health services. Organizations providing HIV prevention programmes for men who have sex with men have suspended their activities because of the hostile environment. Consequently, many people have lost access to condoms, HIV testing and PrEP, a medication that helps prevent HIV infection. Health workers warn that reduced access to these services could increase HIV transmission as vulnerable populations remain hidden.

Human rights groups condemn the crackdown.

Human rights organizations argue that Niger’s new legislation reflects a broader regional trend toward stricter anti-LGBTQ+ laws in several African countries. Furthermore, Front Line Defenders urged the government to repeal all laws that criminalise people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Meanwhile, experts warn that these policies threaten both fundamental human rights and years of progress in HIV prevention across the region.
