China’s biopharmaceutical sector has achieved a major milestone, with home-grown medicines accounting for over 80 percent of all novel drug approvals in the first half of the year. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, regulators cleared 38 innovative drugs for sale, 31 of which were developed domestically. Alongside a record US$110 billion in cross-border out-licensing deals, officials confirmed the sector has executed a structural transformation.
The recent approvals highlight advances in complex medical treatments. A prominent highlight includes Shanghai-based CARsgen Therapeutics’ Satri-cel, which became the world’s first CAR-T cell therapy approved for solid tumors. Designed for late-stage stomach cancer patients, the therapy re-engineers a patient’s immune cells to target cancer proteins.
“The innovation quality of China’s pharmaceutical industry has achieved a systemic leap,” stated Ministry spokesman Tao Qing during a Beijing press briefing.
Beyond oncology, medical device innovation also expanded. Regulators approved an implantable brain-computer interface (BCI) system developed by Neuracle Medical Technology to restore hand motor function in spinal cord injury patients—marking the world’s first commercial clearance for such a device.
Market Resilience and Global Integration
The surge in out-licensing agreements demonstrates growing international demand for Chinese biopharmaceutical research. Global pharmaceutical companies are increasingly partnering with Chinese biotechnology firms to secure licensing rights for novel candidates. As domestic regulators streamline approval pathways, Chinese biopharma developers are solidifying their position within the global healthcare supply chain.
