An alarming humanitarian disaster is unfolding across eastern Chad as over 938,000 displaced people face critical shortages, with Sudan refugees Chad water supplies running dangerously dry across overcrowded camps. According to reporting by Al Jazeera, thousands of families who escaped violent conflict and atrocities in Darfur now fight daily for basic survival in settlements like Goudrane and Adre. Consequently, severe funding shortfalls for international aid agencies have left water tanks empty for days, forcing women and children to scramble over scarce delivery trucks.
Aid Shortfalls and Rising Health Risks
Humanitarian organizations operating in eastern Chad report that existing water infrastructure cannot keep pace with the massive influx of displaced families. Bouts of extreme heat combined with inadequate sanitation facilities dramatically increase the spread of waterborne illnesses among young children.
“We have medicine to deal with infections and bacterial problems, but without clean water, you cannot take it,” stated medical personnel at the Goudrane camp clinic.
Specifically, relief agencies like Solidarites International warn that current funding covers only a fraction of required borehole construction, pipeline expansion, and water treatment operations.
