APEC energy ministers gathered in Beijing to address intensifying challenges in regional energy infrastructure. Projections indicate regional electricity consumption could nearly double by 2060. Consequently, member economies are prioritizing grid resilience, broader energy access, and consumer cost management.
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence creates significant structural pressure on national power grids. For instance, electricity demand from AI data centers grew by 17 percent recently.
However, digital technologies also provide essential tools for advanced demand forecasting and grid management. Therefore, regional policymakers are advocating for specialized workforce development and robust cybersecurity safeguards.
Ensuring financial affordability and rural access remains a paramount concern for member states. Specifically, ministers called for expanded financing mechanisms to support low-income households. In addition, off-grid and mini-grid solutions will extend reliable power to remote communities. Furthermore, economies plan to diversify supply chains and protect critical submarine infrastructure against disruptions.
